The Board is responsible for ILM’s strategic direction, ensuring that its business is conducted in accordance with its charitable aims, and for monitoring its operations and overall performance. It is made up of five ‘Appointed Directors’ (appointed by The City and Guilds of London Institute) and four ‘Elected Directors’ (elected by ILM Voting Members).
Peter Cheese (Chairman)
Peter was until August 2009 the global managing director of Accenture’s Talent and Organisation Performance consulting business, which grew to over 3000 consultants worldwide. He now works as an independent consultant, is a London Business School Executive Fellow, teaches, writes and speaks widely, and sits on the boards of three small consulting businesses and two NGOs, all focused on the wider challenges of skills and talent.
Christine Abbott
Christine is a self employed management and leadership consultant and ILM centre manager for the Centre for Action Learning Facilitation. She is studying for a PhD at the University of York and is a visiting lecturer at the Open University and Leeds Metropolitan University. In 2000 Christine was elected National Chairman of ILM, leading the organisation into the merger with NEBSM.
Louis Armstrong
Louis was Chief Executive of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors from June 1998 to August 2010 and is now a Senior Adviser specialising in global business development. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and was awarded the CBE for services to the property industry in 2004. An Oxford University graduate, Louis qualified as a Barrister, and is a former Rear Admiral in the Royal Navy.
Nick Bradley
Nick has a strong commercial marketing and media background, having worked at director level for companies such as Getty Images, Murdoch Magazines (part of the News International group), EMAP and Bauer Media, before joining City & Guilds as Director of Group Marketing in 2009. In this role, Nick oversees brand and customer experience development, marketing activation, digital strategy and strategic partnerships.
Keith Brooker
Following time in the engineering industry and teaching at a college of technology, Keith spent seven years at the British Standards Institution providing teaching and learning support for technical education. Having joined City & Guilds in 1984, he was appointed a Director in 1991 and retired in 2008. Alongside his ILM involvement he is a trustee director of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and a Governor of Barnfield College, Luton.
Philip Ellaway
Philip has over 20 years’ experience in developing market leading teaching and learning resources in print and online. His board responsibilities at Heinemann / Harcourt included eLearning, Strategy and eAssessment, and he has consulted in branding, telecoms, broadcast and IT. He has taught in adult education, served in school governor and PTA roles, and was educated at Imperial College (Physics) and London Business School (MBA).
Gordon Headley
Gordon is Chief HR Officer with Tullow Oil plc, a FTSE 30 Company with significant operations in 22 countries. With responsibility for doubling the size of the workforce in under 2 years, he is passionate about effective leadership and development. Before moving into People Management, he worked in Engineering Management and Oilfield Development before completing his MBA at Henley Management College. Gordon is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the IOD.
John Jenkins
John is currently the Divisional Welfare Support Officer of the Army’s 5th Division based in Shrewsbury, with a staff of 80 full time and 200 part time workers and 300 volunteers. Prior to taking up this post he served for 31 years, as a commissioned Officer, in the Army. He joined the ISM in 1987, as a Fellow, and was a Founding Member of ILM.
Chris Wilkinson (Deputy Chairman)
Chris Wilkinson is Client Services Director for Right Corecare, and manages a team of HR Consultants Counsellors, with responsibility for meeting stringent service level agreement targets for over 200 contracts. The role brings him into contact with senior civil servants and business leaders in many government departments, and all business sectors.
