Change to ILM centre numbers

ILM centre numbers are set to change. In 2009 ILM will be adopting industry-standard National Centre Numbers (NCNs) for all centres and providers. This will enable us to offer you an improved range of online services in the coming year.

How does this affect me?

  • If your current ILM centre number begins with an R, we will be contacting you in the new year with your new National Centre Number.
  • If you already have a National Centre Number, but do not currently use it with ILM, we will contact you to explain when this will become your official ILM centre number.
  • If you already use a National Centre Number as your ILM Centre number, this change will not affect you.

Funding update for England

ILM has welcomed the announcement by Further Education Minister Sion Simon that Level 2 qualifications on the QCF and worth at least 13 credits, should be regarded as ‘full’. This ‘fullness’ is key to funding in England where Train to Gain monies are only available for full qualifications – traditionally only NVQs.

ILM has been lobbying hard for this decision on behalf of all centres and employers who have bitterly complained that the funding rules did not allow them to choose the qualification they needed. Under the new rules an ILM Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading should be treated as a full Level 2 for funding purposes. However, the funding will only apply ‘where SSCs (Sector Skills Councils) agree this meets their sector's skill demands’. ILM is working with Management Standards Centre, the Standard Setting Body for leadership and management (as there is no SSC for management) to ensure that this condition is met. As soon as we have confirmation we will let centres in England know.

Read full details of the Minister’s statement and the follow-up information from QCA.

This news follows on from Skills Secretary John Denham’s announcement about the willingness to fund individual units under the Train to Gain funding regime from 1st January 2009. ILM is currently in discussions with the LSC to ensure that appropriate ILM units can be funded with T2G money. We would like to see the inclusion of:

  • Level 2 Award in Team Leading
  • Level 2 Award in Introduction to Business Improvement Techniques
  • Level 3 Award in First Line Management

In the meantime, any centre wishing the offer the Level 2 Award in Introduction to Business Improvement Techniques which is already approved for the Level 2 Award in Team Leading can have this add-on approval for free. We will keep our English centres up to date with the outcomes of these negotiations.

Higher Level Qualifications

If you are seeking approval / re-approval for qualifications at 6 and 7 then download this download this guide to submission to the ILM Higher Education panel.

Assessment update

Following your feedback we've updated the look and feel of the mandatory assessments for Team Leading, First Line Management and Management qualifications at Levels 2, 3 and 4. Please note the original content has not changed but extra guidance has been given for each section. Centres can use both the original or the updated versions. Download the updated assessments.

Good news on Management Apprenticeships

We are pleased to announce that following ILM qualifications have been approved onto the Management Standards Centre’s (MSC’s) Apprenticeship Framework as the knowledge based elements. These replace the former NQF provision on the framework:

500/3642/7 – ILM L2 Award in Exploring Business Enterprise (QCF)
500/3586/1 – ILM L3 Award in First Line Management (QCF)
500/3607/5 – ILM L5 Award in Management (Wales) (QCF)

The latest Apprenticeship Framework is 5f. This version was approved on 1 November 2008, and should be the framework used for all learners registered on an apprenticeship after this date. For further information on the Framework for Team Leading and Management Apprenticeships, please contact the Management Standards Centre (MSC) direct on 020 7240 2826, e-mail management.standards@managers.org.uk or visit the MSC website.

Coaching

20 January – London
3 February – Glasgow
10 February – Southampton
14 May – Belfast

Guest speaker, Carol Wilson
International speaker, writer and broadcaster Carol Wilson is Managing Director of Performance Coach Training in partnership with Sir John Whitmore. She experienced the value of coaching at first hand when she worked at board level with Sir Richard Branson during the first decade of Virgin and became the first woman in the world to found a successful record company, the first woman director of global corporate Polygram and is now Honorary Vice President and Head of Accreditation at the Association for Coaching.

‘Goal setting in a coaching style’

Carol will present The EXACT Goal Setting Model. Specifically developed for use in coaching, the EXACT model stands on the shoulders of the established SMART model. During this highly interactive workshop, Carol will:
  • Demonstrate how to coach to an EXACT goal with a volunteer
  • Explore how EXACT works through group discussion
  • Pinpoint why it differs from SMART
  • Explain how EXACT operates on a neural level by engaging the brain’s Reticular Activating System to enable people to achieve their goals
  • Identify where it is most appropriate to use EXACT or SMART
Participants receive full notes and will have the opportunity to practise and discuss the model.

'What makes managers tick?' David Pardey
Why do people become managers, what do they think of the role and at what point in their careers do they make the step into a managerial career? As one of the UK’s leading authorities on leadership and management development, ILM wanted to find out answers to these and other questions about the reality of being a manager today. The outcomes of this research will be presented exclusively at this series of events.

As the UK economy suffers one of the biggest downturns for decades, training, development and career progression for managers is threatened. Understanding managers, how they tick and what they expect from their role will help provide a vital edge for those involved in developing, recruiting or supervising managers.

Enterprise

27 January – Manchester
4 March – Leeds
1 July – London

Guest speaker, Deirdre Bounds

Deirdre went from zero to hero in 10 years, selling her ethical travel company i-to-i.com for millions. She is an entrepreneur in the purest sense – no commercial experience, no family history of enterprise, no money – just a great idea, a pile of passion, masses of mistakes and a sense of humour. She is living proof that business and personal success is available to all, regardless of background, gender, race, social class or any other obstacle you can throw at it.

‘Business in 21st Century’
Business in the 21st century must be executed differently to succeed in this mad and fast world. Rapid innovation is key to competition in the global market place. Deirdre upholds creativity and execution as the new utopia in business and she uncovers the keys to constant innovation:

  • Individuality is the future, tips to get creative in the workplace, home and in your life
  • Does your brand make people, mad, sad or glad? - if not, pack it in
  • Move at the speed of light, the world is chasing you
  • Find your mini monopoly and the cash rolls in
  • Everything is in the ethics
  • Execution is key, don't just give me yet another idea

Leadership

5 March – Newcastle
25 March – Chepstow
18 May – Bristol
24 June – Nottingham
16 September – Peterborough

Guest speaker, Professor Ralph Stacey

Ralph Stacey is Professor of Management and Director of the Complexity and Management Centre at the Business School of the University of Hertfordshire. He has devoted many years looking at how the complexity sciences are used to understand sources of stability and change in organisations. He has written and co-authored a number of books and articles on the subject including Strategic Management and Organisational Dynamics (2007).

‘Leadership, continuity and change in organisations’
An organisation is commonly thought of as a system produced by its individual members, and its leader as someone who formulates organisational vision, objectives and values, inspiring others to share them. Ralph proposes that such ‘heroic’ leadership amounts to an idealisation which obscures the ordinary, everyday activity of leading. He argues that an organisation is ongoing patterns of interaction between people in which their identities emerge. One such identity is that of a leader which emerges in social processes of being recognised as such by others, while at the same time recognising the roles of those others. Both ‘good’ and ‘bad’, both ‘reflective’ and ‘neurotic’ forms of leadership are formed in this way.
