Leadership qualifications

Because of the different challenges involved in learning to lead, ILM’s leadership qualifications – ILM Level 7 Award, Certificate and Diploma in Strategic Leadership  – tend to place great emphasis on the learning process and how behaviour change can be made.

There are three main techniques used on programmes leading to ILM’s leadership qualifications:

  • Practical activities – these are substantial practical challenges that are used to enable learners to acquire the skills and confidence required by effective leaders
  • Action learning – developed in the 1950s by Professor Reg Revans, this emphasises learning driven by solving workplace problems using the combined knowledge and experience of other leaders and managers in an Action Learning Set, supported by an experienced facilitator
  • Experience and reflection – using David Kolb’s learning cycle as the basis for improving performance by: exploring personal experiences using learning about the ideas and practices of others, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of one’s own behaviour and planning how to change
